SIX years ago, Betty Tydeman came up with the idea to transform a neglected patch of parkland in West Heidelberg's Buna Reserve into a community garden.
Now a reality, the community garden in Boyd Crescent is bursting with a bountiful harvest. "I haven't bought vegetables since Christmas," Tydeman laughs.
Since late last year, the council-owned land has been transformed into a fenced garden with 27 plots, managed by a residents committee.
Tydeman and her neighbour Barry Hill are helping to teach Heidelberg West locals the joys of gardening.
Tydeman hopes the garden becomes a legacy for the community and brings locals together. "I would like people to be inspired by it. I want it to last," she says.
