THE Darebin Creek remains clogged with "massive" amounts of rubbish, almost two months after the Christmas Day storms.
A community clean-up event has been organised to remove the debris later this month, which includes plastic bottles, plastic bags, straws and smaller pieces of plastic.
The fierce Christmas Day storm and subsequent flood damaged the parklands more than any other flood senior ranger Peter Wiltshire could recall.
Mr Wiltshire said the storm had caused significant change to the creek's water flow and shape.
"Near the Clifton Bridge, the water used to be one metre deep and it's now ankle deep."
Darebin Parklands Association president Ingrid Svendsen said she had never seen so much rubbish at one time. "It's quite hard to measure, but there's a flotilla of drink bottles and a five-metre section of the boardwalk was washed away," she said.
The problem was highlighted late last month, when an East Brunswick resident helped rescue a platypus from the Merri Creek in Thornbury.
Lauren Keim cut the creature free after she noticed it had become entangled in pieces of plastic, fishing lines and tree roots.
The Darebin Creek community clean up is on February 26 at 1pm. For more information, visit dpa.org.au
