Bottomline: Whale of a fine

21 Feb, 2012 10:08 AM
AN Eltham man was fined $2500 earlier this month for endangering a whale.

Adriano Mazzini, 41, received a fine in the Dromana Magistrates Court on February 9 for taking his boat within 200 metres of a whale in Port Phillip Bay near Safety Beach on August 13 last year.

He pleaded guilty to approaching the whale, and to a second charge relating to making a sudden change of speed or direction while in the "caution zone" of a whale. Whales are protected under Victoria's wildlife laws.

The maximum penalty for harassing, chasing or herding a whale is a whopping $100,000 fine.
